Earlier this spring, the Woman’s Club of Cypress (WCC) held its 50th anniversary luncheon in Seal Beach. Over 85 members, guests, and local elected officials attended including Assemblywoman Young Kim, Cypress Mayor Mariellen Yarc and Santa Ana Unified Board Member Cecilia Iglesias. Twelve past presidents joined current President Veena Narain at the luncheon: Dodie Jacobsen, Jean Schultz, JoAnne West, Bobbie Bloch, Kathi McGraw, Nancy Hooven, Maria Sterk, Gloria Livingston, Mariellen Yarc, Judy Wagner and Joyce Grohmann.
One of the highlights was Assemblywoman Kim reading a letter from Governor Jerry Brown that thanked the Club for its years of service to the community. The WCC also received a Joint Resolution applauding their 50th anniversary from State Senator Bob Huff and Assemblyman Young Kim. In a surprise statement, Assemblywoman Kim made the announcement that Mariellen Yarc had been chosen Woman of the Year in the 65th Assembly District.
The Woman’s Club of Cypress is a valuable community resource. Established in 1966, WCC has grown from 25 members to nearly 100 today. Members are women of all ages and ma
ny different ethnic and professional backgrounds. Each member brings her own unique talents, skills, and personality to the Club. They show their dedication to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service.
Each year, the Club raises funds to distribute academic, vocational, and fine arts scholarships. Over the last 50 years, they had many outstanding accomplishments in the community from raising funds for local school supplies and supporting the city’s Tree City program. The Woman’s Club of Cypress has created a multitude of ways for local women to get involved and create lasting friendships.
