With themes like “Coastal Life 1966,” Dana Point Harbor’s historical tale serves as a reflection of its secluded beauty and remarkable charm. On August 29 of this year, the scheduled opening of a 50-year-old time capsule will add on to this tale.
Fifty years ago, on August 29, 1966, a dedication ceremony was held in honor of the harbor’s construction, which included burying a time capsule in an 8-ton granite rock. The event took place at Doheny State Beach and was sponsored by the County of Orange, the Orange County Harbor District, and other local organizations. Celebrating with music and a BBQ dinner, hundreds of locals and officials gathered to place numerous documents, mementos, and souvenirs in the capsule to commemorate the momentous occasion.
This year marks half a century since that celebration, in which the time capsule’s contents will finally be revealed. The unveiling ceremony will be held at Dana Point Harbor’s Baby Beach at around 4 PM, with a BBQ dinner and entertainment for all attendees. In honor of the ceremony, the 16,000 pound rock that harbored the time capsule all those years will be permanently set at Baby Beach, embellished with a plaque. As the debut of the capsule approaches, the excitement of longtime Dana Point residents rises, along with their increasing desire to view the mysteries of the Sixties.
