Menifee Elks Lodge Members Get Helpful Tax Information at Free Workshop
By Lance Christiansen
Nonprofit organizations are, of course, all about doing good things for the community. They are also about wanting to do the right thing as far as paying their taxes. That’s why Vice Chair Diane Harkey was sponsoring another Sales & Use Tax for Nonprofit Organizations Workshop today at the Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce. “The less time nonprofits spend figuring out their sales tax the more time they can spend benefitting their particular charity” commented BOE instructor Lance Christiansen. For instance, Menifee Elks Lodge Secretary Vaughn Ryan asked if a donation of sodas pulled from their resale inventory and donated to a veterans’ event would generate use tax? These are the types of fundraising questions the workshop, also sponsored by Senator Mike Morrell and Supervisor Marion Ashley, hoped to answer. “Yes” is the answer, by the way. The Elks Lodge would generate use tax based on their cost for the wholesale sodas they donated.
